Further details of the known children of Isaac Wotton and Jane Haydon

Anne Wotton born on 5 Jul 1819 in N.Yeo, Poughill, Devon.

Next Generation in our Family History. See Main Text

John Wotton born on 30 September 1821 in Poughill, Devon.

John was recorded in the Parish Register baptised on 30 September 1821.John was not listed in the family home for the 1841 census.

I believe that John Wotton married Sally Mare in the July-September quarter of 1847 in Crediton, Devon. I believe that Sally Mare was baptised on 27 July 1823 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, the daughter of Richard Mare and Grace Elworthy, and her younger sister, Eliza Mare, married Isaac Wotton, the younger brother of John in 1855.

John and Sally had the following known children:

For the 1851 census he was recorded in Venn Cottages, Cheriton Fitzpaine village along with his wife Sally, 3 year old daughter, Harriet, and one year old son, Edward. Although Harriet was identified as born in Cheriton, Edward was recorded as born in Studleigh,

For the census of 1861 John and his family were recorded in Upham Buildings, Cheriton Fitzpaine. John was listed a Tanner's carter and the family has increased with the addition of Henry aged 8, Bessy aged 5, John aged 3, and William aged 1. The John Madge, a Boarder, aged 18, and also identified as a Tanner's carter was the son of his sister Ann Wotton and Joseph Madge, her family being split up due to Joseph being in Portsea Jail at this time. A further two boarders were recorded in the household, Henry Wills aged 21 and John Yeo aged 18, both identified as carters.

For the 1871 census the the couple had moved to Twerton, English Coombe, Somerset, where they were recorded with four of their children, Edward aged 21, Henry aged 18, John aged 13 and William aged 11. The two eldest boys were identified as Wheelwrights which must have been useful wih the father being a Carter.

For the census of 1891 John and Sally were recorded in Main Street , Marshfield, Chipping Sodbury. Their eldest son Edward had been living in Marshfield since at least 1881 which may explain the couple's move fron Twerton. John was again identified as an Agricultural Labourer.

I believe Sally Wotton died in 1892 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the April-June quarter of that year of the death of a Sally Wotton aged 68 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.

For the census of 1901 the widowed John was recorded in the household of his eldest son Edward, in Main Sttreet, Marshfield, Chipping Sodbury. In the transcription of the census his place of birth is given as Pill, but whether this is a misreading of Poughill from the original, or is wrong in the original has not been checked. Edward was recorded as aged 51, a Timber Merchant, married to Mary (Ann Tarrant), aged 50 born in Dunkerton, Somerset, and two of their children, Frederick aged 22, and Ernest aged 11, both born in Marshfield were included in the household.

I believe John Wotton died in 1901 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the July-September quarter of that year of the death of a John Wotton aged 78 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.

Isaac Wotton born on 8 February 1824 in Poughill, Devon.

Isaac was recorded in the household with his parents for the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

I believe that Isaac Wotton married Eliza Mare in the October-December quarter of 1855 in Crediton, Devon. I believe that Eliza Mare was the daughter of Richard Mare and Grace Elworthy, and her older sister, Sally Mare, married John Wotton, the older brother of Isaac in 1847.

and Isaac and Eliza had the following known children:

For the census 1861 Isaac was living in Cheriton Fitzpaine a few doors down the road down the street from his father, with his wife Elizabeth, and children Laura aged 4 and Frederick aged 4 months. Isaac was identified as a Shoemaker and there was a lodger Alexnder Cox, aged 11, born in Bistol, also listed in the household.

I believe Eliza Wotton, also died in 1874 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the October-December quarter of that year for the death of an Eliza Wotton aged 49 in Crediton, Devon.

I believe Isaac Wotton died in 1874 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the October-December quarter of that year for the death of an Isaac Wotton aged 50 in Crediton, Devon.

There is also an entry in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of the Western Times Devon, England of 29 October 1874 Deaths - Wotton. Oct. 26, at Cheriton Fitzpaine, Mr. Isaac Wotton aged 50. Wotton. Oct. 22, at Cheriton Fitzpaine, Eliza, the widow of Mr. Isaac Wotton, aged 49.. As the deaths are so close together it would seem that the deaths would be unlikely to be of purely "of natural causes". Possibly illness?

Harriet Wotton baptised on 12 June 1831 in Shobroke, Devon.

Harriet was baptised on 12 June 1831 in Shobroke, Devon, recorded as the daughter of Isazac and Jane Wotton.

For the 1841 census Harriet was recorded in the household of her parents Issac and Jane in Cherion Fitzpaine.

I believe Harriet Wotton married John Bradford in the July-September of 1849 in Crediton, Devon. I believe that John Bradford was baptised on 11 February 1821, the son of John Bradford and Elizabeth Hancock.

Harriet and John had the following known children:

For the census of 1851 the couple were recorded in Cheriton Fitzpaine, along with their 1 year old son John. Harriet's husband, John Bradford was identified as aged 27, a Timber merchant, born in Cheriton Fitzpaine.

For the census of 1871 the family seem to have moved and were recorded in Shobroke, Devon. John was now listed as a Farm Labourer, and included in the household are six of their children: William aged 16, and Walter aged 12, Alice aged 8, Edmund aged 5, Frederick aged 3, and baby Ellen under one year old. All the children with the exception of Ellen who was listed as born in Shobroke, were identified as born in Cheriton Fitzpaine.

John was still listed as an Agricultural Labourer, and included in the household are three of their children: Frederick aged 13, Ellen aged 10 and Emma aged 7. Frederick was identified as born in Cheriton Fitzpaine but Ellen and Emma were both listed as born in Shobroke.

I believe John Bradford died in 1904 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the October-December quarter of that year for the death of a John Bradford aged 82 in Exeter, Devon.

I believe Emma Bradford, nee Wotton, died in 1906 as there is an entry in the BMD index for the April-June quarter of that year for the death of an Emma Bradford aged 74 in Exeter, Devon.

Thomas Wotton born in 1838 in Poughill/Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

Thomas was recorded in his parents household for the 1841 census but not 1851 census. As he would have still only been 12 for the 1851 census and there is no obvious record of him elsewhere in Devon for the 1851 census he may have died in infancy. There is certainly a record of the death of a Thomas Flood Wotton in April-June 1843 in Crediton which could be him. (Although why Thomas FLOOD Wotton?)

Known Children of John Wotton and Sally Ware

Harriet Wotton was born about 1848 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon

With her parents aged 12 for the 1861 census. Harriet married Charles Jones on 3 July 1871 in Englishcombe, Somerset. Harriet was identified as a Spinster of "Full Age", resident in Englishcombe, the daughter of John Wotton, a Carter. Charles was identified as a Bachelor of "Full Age", a Labourer, resident in Woolhope, Herefordshire, the son of Edward Jones, a Farmer. The witnesses were Edward Wotton and Bessie Wotton, presumably Harriet's brother and sister. According to later census records Charles Jones was born about 1845 in Woolhope, Herefordshire. The 1911 census identified Harriet and Charles as having had 12 children, 3 of whom had passed away. 11 can be identified from the various censuses:

  • Charles A. Jones about 1872, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Edward Jones about 1874, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Ernest A. Jones about 1877, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Florence A. Jones about 1880, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Harriet Jones about 1882, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • William Jones about 1884, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Walter Jones about 1886, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Percy Jones about 1888, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Mabel Jones about 1889, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Beatrice Jones about 1891, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.
  • Ethel Jones about 1893, born in Hereford, Herefordshire.

I believe Charles Jones died in 1902 aged 57, with the death registered in Hereford, and Harriet Jones, nee Wotton, died sometime after the census of 1911.

Edward Wotton was born about 1850 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 21 for the 1871 census. I believe Edward Wooton married Mary Ann Elizabeth Tarrant in 1872 with the marriage registered in Bath, Somerset. According to later census records Mary Ann Elizabeth Tarrant was born about 1851 in Dunkerton, Somerset. From the various census records it would seem that Edward, a carpenter and latterly Timber Merchant, and Mary Ann had at least 9 children:

  • Morena Wotton born about 1872 in Englishcombe, Somerset.
  • Henry Wotton born about 1874 in Newton St Loe, Somerset.
  • Kate Mercer Wotton born about 1878, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Frederick Wooton born about 1880, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Edward Wotton born about 1882, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Arthur Wotton born about 1884, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Alice Wotton born about 1885, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Eva Wotton born about 1887, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.
  • Ernest Wotton born about 1889, born in Marshfield, Gloucestershire.

I believe Mary Anne Wotton died aged 61, in 1913, in registerd in Chipping Sodbury, and Edward Wotton died in age 67 in 1918 registered in Bath, Somerset.

Henry Wotton was born about 1852 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 18 for the 1871 census. I believe Henry Wotton initally married Lydia Love in 1879 with the marriage registered in Bath, Somerset. According to the 1881 census records Lydia Love was born about 1851 in Bath, Somerset, For the census of 1881 the couple had Henry's brother Edward's daughter, Kate living with them, identified as "Cousin" when it should have been "Niece". I believe Lydia Wotton died in 1885 in Bath, and that in 1886 again in Bath Henry Wotton re-married to an Eliza Williams. According to later census records Eliza Williams was born about 1862 in Bath, Somerset. From the various census records it would seem that Henry, a Foreman Carpenter, and Eliza had at least 6 children:

  • Blanche Wotton born about 1889, born in Bath, Somerset.
  • Ernest Wotton born about 1891, born in Bath, Somerset.
  • Beatrice Wotton born about 1892, born in Bath, Somerset.
  • May Wotton born about 1895, born in Bath, Somerset.
  • Leonard Wotton born about 1899, born in Bath, Somerset.
  • Herbert Wotton born about 1901, born in Bath, Somerset.

I believe Henry Wotton died aged 73 in 1927 with the death registered in Bath. I believe Charles Leonard Wotton Henry and Eliza's son identified as Leonard in the 1901 census married Kate Emelia Parker in 1925 with the marriage registered in Bath. I believe that Eliza Wotton, her son Leonard Wotton and his wife Kate Emmelia Wotton were all killed at 14 Elm Grove Terrace, Twerton, Bath, during the Luftwaffe raid on Bath on 25 April 1942. There was also a Henry Wottton aged 75 in the house who also lost his life. I would assume this was
Henry Wotton, the cousin of Henry Wotton, Eliza's husband, son of Isaac Wotton and Eliza Mare. (I suspect that Leonard and Kate had no family.) Further extensive information on the Bath Blitz can be found elswhere on the web at the Bath Blitz Memorial Project Web Site. This includes casulty lists by location including Streets A to I which includes the names of the casualties for 14 Elm Grove Terrace. It also includes an engineers report on the damage to Elm Grove Terrace and two images of the devastion of Elm Grove Terrace

Bessie Wotton was born about 1855 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With her parents for the 1861 census. With her parents aged 5 for the 1861 census. I believe Bessie Wotton initially married a John Mercer, a Labourer, on 28 September 1874. Bessie was identified as "of full age", a spinster resident in Englishcombe, daughter of John Wotton, a Labourer. John Mercer was also identified as "of full age", a bachelor resident in Englishcombe, son of George Mercer, a Labourer. The witnesses were Henry Wotton, and Lydia Love, who I presume were her brother and the lady he later married in 1879. I believe that John Mercer died in the spring of 1876 as there is a record of the burial on 8 March 1876 of a John Mercer , a resident of Twerton, in the Englishcombe Parish Register. I believe that it was this widowed Bessie Mercer who married a Frederick Wotton on 27 December 1880, in Widcombe, Somerset. This is despite the fact that this Bessie Mercer was identified as a Spinster aged 25, also resident in Waterloo Buildings, Widcombe, Somerset, the daughter of George Mercer, a Labourer. Frederick Wotton was identified as a Bachelor aged 20, a Railway Porter, resident in Waterloo Buildings, Widcombe, Somerset, the son of Isaac Wotton (deceased), a Shoemaker. Therefore if I am correct and this Bessie Mercer should have been recorded as a widow, and daughter of John Wotton, a Labourer and therefore Fredrick Wotton and Bessie Mercer were cousins. Whether the mix up in Bessie's surname and her fathers identity were simply a mistake or done deliberately to disguise the fact they were cousins is unknown but as there was no legal issue with the marriage of cousins, therefore either is possible. The witnesses were William Wotton and Alfred J. Salter. William Wotton was Frederick's cousin and his marriage his included on the same page of the Parish Register. Bessie and Frederick had one known child, a son, Frederick Wotton who was baptised 21 February 1886 with his parents recorded as Frederick and Bessie Wotton of Twerton, with Frederick identified as a "Platelayer". I have been unable to find a record of a Frederick and Bessie Wootten for the 1881 census, although there is a Bessie Mercer was recorded in for the 1881 census, resident in Barton Street, Bath Walcot, Somerset, identified as a lodger, married, aged 24, born in Exeter, Devon which potentially could be Bessie having given her previous name but why would she and where was Frederick? For the 1891 census what is again assumed to be Bessie Wotton, was recorded in Paragon, St Swithins, Bath, identified as a boarder, widowed, aged 34, a Scarf Maker, born in Somersetshire. I believe her son Frederick was recorded in the Bath workhouse in the St Lukes district of Bath, identified as Frederick Wootten, aged 5 a Scholar and a Pauper identified as born in Bath. For the 1901 census what is again assumed to be Bessie Wotton, was recorded in 9 Elmgrove Terrace, Twerton, Bath, identified as a boarder, widowed, aged 44, a Stay Maker, born in Cherriton, Devonshire. Again her son Frederick was not with her but was recorded along with thirteen other young children in the "Cottage Home" at Lambridge Place, Walcot, Bath, in the care of Carrie Reed, a "Foster Mother". He was identified as Fred Wootten, aged 14, born in Bath. For the 1911 census the same Bessie Wotton, was still resident at 9 Elmgrove Terrace, (a house with 5 rooms) but now identified as the head of the household, widowed, aged 55 a Corset Maker in a Corset factory, born in Devonshire. Included in the household was her son Frederick Wotton, now aged 25, a Smith's Stricker in an Iron Foundry, born in Twerton, Bath. Also listed in the household were 2 Lodgers, Henry Parker, aged 25, a Gradener, born in Birmingham, and Annie Glover, aged 62, a Widow, a Tailoress, born in Wiltshire. Shortly after this census on 15 April 1911 Bessie Wotton married Henry William Guildford. Bessie was identified as aged 58, a Widow, of 9 Elm Grove Terrace, Bath, the daughter of John Wotton, Labourer (deceased). Henry was identified as aged 67, a Widower,of 9 Denmark Street, an Engine Fitter, son of Henry Guilford, Station Master (deceased). Although at the time of his marriage to Bessie Henry's address was given as Denmark Street, 10 years previously at the time of the 1901 census he was resident, along with his wife Mary and daughter Lily, one door down from Bessie in Elm Grove Street. According to this census Henry William Guilford was born about 1843 in Brighton, Sussex. I believe Henry William Guilford died aged 84 in 1927 and Bessie Gilford, nee Wotton died aged 74 in 1929, with both deaths recorded in Bath, Somerset.

John Wotton was born about 1857 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 13 for the 1871 census. I believe John married Emily Rapsey in 1879 with the marriage registered in Bath, Somerset. According to later census records Emily Rapsey was born about 1855 in Twerton, Bath, Somerset. From the various census records it would seem that John, a latterly a Railway Foreman, and Emily had at least 7 known children:

  • Albert Wotton born about 1880, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • Walter Wotton born about 1882, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • Charles Wotton born about 1884, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • Lydia Wotton born about 1886, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • George Wotton born about 1890, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • Arthur Wotton born about 1892, born in Bradford, Yorkshire.
  • Elizabeth Emily Wotton born about 1896,born in Bradford, Yorkshire.

Sometime shortly after the birth of George the family seem to have moved north to Yorkshire as the last 2 children were born in Bradford, Yorkshire. I believe Emily Wotton died in 1916 aged 61, and John Wotton died in 1939 aged 82, with both deaths recorded in Bradford, Yorkshire.

William Wotton was born about 1859 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 11 for the 1871 census. William Wotton married a Kate Woodman on 27 December 1880, in Widcombe, Somerset. According to later census records Kate Woodman was born about 1858 in Batheaston, Somerset. William was identified as a Bachelor aged 20, a Labourer, resident in Princes Buildings, Widcombe, Somerset, the son of John Wotton, a Labourer. Kate was ientified as a Spinster aged 22, resident in Queens Terrace, the son of Edwin Woodman, a Gardiner. The witnesses were Frederick Wotton and Bessie Wotton. The Frederick Wotton was William's cousin and his marriage his included on the same page of the Parish Register. For the 1881 census the newly weds were lodging in in Twerton East Buildings, Twerton, Bath. Also in these lodgings was a Laura amd Joseph Teear, with Laura being Laura Wotton, John's cousin, daughter of Isaac Wotton and Eliza Mare. From the various census records it would seem that William, a Railway carman, and Kate had at least 5 children:

  • Maud Wooton about 1882, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • William Wooton born about 1884, born in Twerton, Somerset.
  • John Wooton born about 1886, born in Wells, Somersetshire.
  • Henrietta Wooton born about 1888, born in Wells, Somersetshire.
  • Douglas Wootton born about 1897, born in Wells, Somersetshire.

I believe William Wotton died aged 68 in 1929 and Kate Wotton, nee Woodman, died aged 94 in 1952, with both deaths recorded in Wells, Somerset.

Known children of Isaac Wotton and Eliza Mare.

Laura Wotton was born about 1857 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With her parents aged 4 for the 1871 census. I believe Laura Wotton married Joseph Teear in 1880 with the marriage registered in Bath, Somerset. According to later census records Joseph Teear was born about 1857 in Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire. From the various census records it would seem that Laura and Joseph, Railway Foreman Porter, had at least 5 children:

  • Florence Teear born 1881, born in in Bath, Somerset.
  • Ellen Teear born 1884, born in in Bath, Somerset.
  • Eva Laura Teear born 1886, born in in Bath, Somerset.
  • Ethel Teear born 1889, born in in Bath, Somerset.
  • Walter Ernest Teear born 1892 registered in Bradford, Yorkshire. Walter, married France Lilian Adkins in 1916 in Bradford Yorkishire, and they had at least one child, a son, Gordon Teear born in 1922 in Bradford Yorkshire. It is believed that at some stage thereafter the family emmigrated to Australia where Gordon married a Sylvia Dawn ???. It is believed that both Walter and his wife Frances died in Southern Australia and were buried in Pasadena, Mitcham City. Gordon their son died in 2011 and was also buried in Pasadena, Mitcham City, having been prececease by his wife Sylvia 30 years previously in 1981.

I believe Joseph Teear died in 1930, and Laura Teear, nee Wotton, died in 1939, with both deaths registered in Bradford, Yorkshire.

Frederick Wotton was born about 1860 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 10 for the 1871 census. Frederick Wotton married a Bessie Mercer on 27 December 1880, in Widcombe, Somerset. Frederick was identified as a Bachelor aged 20, a Railway Porter, resident in Waterloo Buildings, Widcombe, Somerset, the son of Isaac Wotton (deceased), a Shoemaker. Despite the fact that his bride Bessie Mercer was identified as a Spinster aged 25, also resident in Waterloo Buildings, Widcombe, Somerset, the daughter of George Mercer, a Labourer, I believe Bessie was in fact Bessie Wotton, the daughter of John Wotton, Fredericks's uncle and Eliza Mare, and therefore Fredrick Wotton's cousin. I believe Bessie had peviously married a John Mercer in 1874 who had died in 1876, and Mercer was her married name with George Mercer, a labourer being her father-in-law. Wheteher the mix up in her surname and her fathers identity were simply a mistake or to disguise the fact they were cousins is unknown but as there was no legal issue with the marriage of cousins, either is possible. The witnesses were William Wotton and Alfred J. Salter. William Wotton was Frederick's cousin and his marriage his included on the same page of the Parish Register. Frederick and Bessie had one known child, a son, Frederick Wotton who was baptised 21 February 1886 with his parents recorded as Frederick and Bessie Wotton of Twerton, with Frederick identified as a "Platelayer". For the subsequent 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses Bessie is identified as a widow, and their son Frederick was what would now be termed as "in care". The fate\whereabouts of Frederick is currently unknown. Note - in the right hand margin against the entry for the baptism of the son Frederick in the Parish Register for Twerton is anotated "Alexander & Julia Wotton" which had me baffled as Alexander Wotton was not a name I could assosiate with any of the Wottons I was researching until I found the following on the internet on a webiste Family History Ego Ago "WOTTON / COX - My great-grandfather was born Alexander Cox. It would seem that he was taken in by the Wotton family who lived in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon. Isaac Wotton (the head of the family) was a shoemaker. Initially, he was termed as a lodger with that family and later he lived with the Berry family in the same village. The interesting thing is that he took the name of Wotton when he got married to my great grandmother in 1878 and Isaac Wotton was a witness. Alexander always stated his birthplace as Bristol. He and Julia Dainton had four children (one of whom died whilst very young) and then he left her around 1891. My mother was told that that he went to America to seek his fortune (he had been a coachman up till then). After 1881 I can find no record of him at all - with either name."

Edwin Wotton was born about 1862 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 8 for the 1871 census. I believe Edwin Wotton married Esther Jane Gibbs in 1885 with the marriage registered in Bath, Somerset. According to the 1901 census record Esther Jane Gibbs was born about 1858 in Newport, Monmouthshire. From the various census records it would seem that Edwin and Esther Jane lived in Trevethin, Pontypool, Monmouthshire where Edwin was a Boot Shop Manager, and they had the following children:

  • Ellen Wotton born about 1886, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire.
  • James Edwin Wotton born about 1889, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire.
  • Arthur Wotton born about 1895, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire.
  • Frederick Wotton born about 1898, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire.
  • Cyril Wotton born about 1902, born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire.

I believe Edwin Woton died aged 54 in 1917 with the death recorded in Pontypool, Monmouthshire. I believe Esther Jane Wotton died aged 72 in 1930 with the death recorded in Bristol, Gloucestershire.

Henry Wotton was born about 1866 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 4 for the 1871 census. I believe Henry was actually born on 17 March 1867 Cheriton, Devon. For the 1881 census Henry was recorded as Harry, aged 14, an Errand Boy, in the house of James and Mary Ewens. He was identified as "Nephew" as the maiden name of Mary Ewens was Mare and she was a sister of his mother Eliza Mare. Somewhat unusually Henry married Jane Walker on 19 October 1889 in Alexandria, Virginia. Henry was recorded as Harry Wotten aged 22 born in Devonshire, the son of Isaac and Eliza Wotten and Jane was recorded as Jane Walker aged 23 born in Gloucestershire, the daughter of George and Sarah Walker. (I believe Jane's mother was actually Charlotte and Jane was born on 3 March 1866 in Marshfield, Gloucester.) From the Familysearch (LDS) website I believe Henry, a Shoemaking Manager, and Jane had at least 4 children:

  • Charlotte Frances Wotton born 22 July 1890 in Alexandria, Virginia, died 17 July 1892 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.
  • Florence May Wotton born 16 January 1893 in Twerton, Somerset who married Victor Richards on 6 September 1932 Truro, Cornwall.
  • Lilian Wotton born 29 January 1896 in Ilfracombe, Devon, who married Richard Short on 7 September 1916 in Ilfracombe, Devon and died 23 January 1977 Ilfracombe, Devon.
  • Elsie Wotton born 12 July 1897 in Ilfracombe, Devon.

I believe Jane Wotton nee Walker died on 31 December 1936, Ilfracombe, Devon. Henry Wotton was killed 25 April 1942 in the "Bath Blitz" when the house he was residing in at 14 Elm Grove, Bath was hit by enemy bombs. I believe he was living with Eliza Wotton the wife of his deceased cousin Henry Wotton, daughter of John Wotton and Sally Mare. Further extensive information on the Bath Blitz can be found elswhere on the web at the Bath Blitz Memorial Project Web Site. This includes casulty lists by location including Streets A to I which includes the names of the casualties for 14 Elm Grove Terrace. It also includes an engineers report on the damage to Elm Grove Terrace and two images of the devastion of Elm Grove Terrace

Known children of Harriet Wotton and John Bradford.

John Bradford was born about 1850 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 11 for the 1861 census. I John Bradford married Emma Strong in 1874 with the marriage registered in Newport, Monmouthshire. Emma Strong was born about 1850 in Crediton, Devon, the daughter of George Strong, a Labourer and Cab Driver, and Susan Madge, who had moved along with her family to Newport circa 1859. Her mother Susan Madge was the daughter of William Madge and Frances Dart, and their son Joseph Madge had married Anne Wotton, sister of John Bradford's mother Harriet Wotton. i.e. John Bradford's Aunt Harriet Wotton had married Emma Strong's Uncle Joseph Madge. From the various census records it would seem that John, initially a Carpenter and latterly Licenced Victualler, and Emma had at least 7 children:

  • George Bradford born about 1874, born in Abercarn, Monmouthshire.

  • Bertha Bradford born about 1886, born in Abercarn, Monmouthshire.
  • Arthur J. Bradford born about 1889, born in Abercarn, Monmouthshire.

For further details on John Bradford and Emma Strong - Click here. I believe John Bradford died aged 43 in 1893 and Emma died aged 76 in 1928 with both deaths registered in Newport, Monmouthshire.

Elizabeth Bradford was born about 1852 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With her parents aged 9 for the 1871 census. I believe Elizabeth married John Ware on 29 July 1878, with the marriage announced in the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette Devon of 2 August 1878 - "Ware—Bradford.—July 29, at the Registry Office, Mr. John Ware, Northtawton, to Miss Elizabeth Bradford, Shobrook." According to later census records John Ware was born about 1850 in Coleridge, Devon. From the various census records it would seem that Elizabeth and John, a Gardener and latterly a Grocer, had at least 7 children:

  • Frank Ware born about 1881, born in Exeter, Devon.
  • Walter Ware born about 1883, born in Exeter, Devon.
  • Alice Ware born about 1885, born in Exeter, Devon.

William Bradford was born about 1855 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

I believe Willaim married Charlotte Pope in 1875 with the marriage registered in Newport, Monmouthshire. According to later census records Charlotte Pope was born about 1857 in Newport, Monmouthshire. From the various census records it would seem that William, a General Haulier, and Charlotte had at least 10 children:

I believe William died in 1934 aged 78, and Charlotte died in 1939 aged 82, with both deaths recorded in Newport, Monmouthshire.

Walter Bradford was born about 1858 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 12 for the 1871 census. I believe Walter enlisted in the Navy on 8 April 1873 as there is a service record for a Walter Bradford born 9 March 1858 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon. This Walter deserted on 6 March 1876 and possibly not unsurprisingly no obvious record of him can be found thereafter. However there is a Walter (E) Bradford who appears in the US censuses 1892 -> who could be one and the same. Various "arrived in the UK" dates 1880, 1889, 1886, 1879. Resided in New Jersey - married a Minnie ??? and had two children Maud 1888 born in Pennsylvania and Nellie 1890 in New Jersey. I suspect this Walter died between 1930 and 1940.

Alice Bradford was born about 1862 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With her parents aged 8 for the 1871 census. I believe Alice married John Baker in 1891 with the marriage registered in Exeter. According to the 1901 census record John Baker was born about 1862 in Holsworthy, Devon. From the various census records it would seem that Alice and John, a Police Constable, had 4 known children:

  • Nellie Bradford Baker born about 1893 in Perranzabuloe, Cornwall.
  • William J. Baker born about 1895, born in Probus, Cornwall.
  • Alma Blanche Baker born about 1898, born in Probus, Cornwall.
  • Harold Bradford Baker born about 1904, born in Probus, Cornwall.

Due to the surname Baker being widespread no obvious dates for the demise of the couple have been identified.

Edmund Bradford was born about 1865 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 5 for the 1871 census. I believe Edmund married Elizabeth Mortimore in 1893 with the marriage registered in Exeter, Devon. From the 1901 census Edmund, an Innkeeper, and Elizabeth had 3 known children:

Charles E. Bradford born about 1894, born in Exmouth, Devon.
  • Florence Amy Bradford born about 1896, born in Exmouth, Devon.
  • Gertrude Ethel Bradford born about 1898, born in Exmouth, Devon.

It would seem that Elizabeth Bradford, nee Mortimore died in 1898, with the death registered in St Thomas Exeter. I believe Edmund remarried to a Harriet Davey in 1900, in Exeter. According to the 1901 census record Harriet Davey was born about 1872 in Topsham, Devon. From the 1911 census it would seem that Edmund had at least a further 3 children with Harriet:

  • Elizabeth Eliza Bradford born about 1903 in Topsham, Devon
  • Alfred William Bradford born about 1906, born in Newport, Monmouthshire.
  • Ellen Bradford born about 1908, born in Newport, Monmouthshire.

I believe Edmund died in 1921 aged 56 and Harriet died in 1950 aged 79, with both deaths registered in Newport, Monmouthshire.

Frederick Bradford was born about 1868 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.

With his parents aged 13 for the 1881 census. I believe Frederick married Eliza Tucker in 1896 with the marriage registered in Exeter, Devon. According to the 1901 census record Eliza Tucker was born about 1872 in Upton Pyne, Devon. From the various census records it would seem that Frederick, a Wine Merchants Cellarman, and Eliza had had at least 2 children:

  • Mabel Bradford born about 1897, born in Exeter.
  • Ellen Bradford born about 1899, born in Exeter.

no obvious dates for the demise of the couple have been identified.

Ellen Bradford was born about 1871 in Shobroke, Devon.

With her parents aged 10 for the 1881 census. I believe Ellen married Richard Modley in 1898 with the marriage registered in Truro, Cornwall. Interestingly the pair seem to have been working in the same establishment (Exeter Workhouse Infirmary?) in St Thomas, Exeter for the census of 1891, Richard as an "Attendant and Ellen as a Nurse. According to the census records Richard Modley was born about 1865 in Exeter, Devon. I believe Richard, latterly an Innkeeper, and Ellen had at least 2 children:

  • Leslie Modley born about 1900 in Tregoney, Cornwall.
  • Beatrice Ellen Modley born 1909 whose birth was registered in Exeter.

I believe Richard Modley died aged 76 in 1942 and Ellen Modley nee Bradford died agd 88 in 1959, with both deaths registered in Exeter.

Emma Bradford was born about 1874 in Shobroke, Devon.

With her parents aged 17 for the 1891 census. For the 1901 census Emma was recorded, aged 27, employed as a Mental Nurse in the Exeter Workhouse Infirmary. I believe Emma married Charles Henry Hills in 1907 with the marriage registered in Exeter. I believe Charles was born on 25 December 1873 in Bombay, India, the son of Henry and Mahalah Hills. For the census of 1911 the couple were recorded at 81 Ladysmith Road, Heavitree, Exeter, a house with 5 rooms, with Charles recorded as a Licensed Victualler. I believe Emma died aged 38 in 1912 with the death recorded in Exeter. (I would assume there were no children born to the couple).
