John Madge - born on 27 December 1813 in Crediton.

For the 1841 census John was recorded in the family home as John Madge, aged 28, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Devon.

There is a record in the Crediton Parish Register of the marriage of a John Madge, a labourer, aged 30, son of William Madge, a labourer, to a Grace Labbett, a weaver, aged 30, daughter of John Labbett, a labourer, on 26 September 1841 in Crediton. There is a corresponding record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1841 of a John Madge to a Grace Labbett (Crediton Vol 10 Page 83).

Grace Labbett was probably the daughter of John Labbett and Susanna Setter born on 12 July 1807 in Crediton, who was recorded as living with her family next door to John Madge and his family for the census of 1841. Grace was identified as aged 34, with the rest of the household listed as James Labbett, aged 58, an Agricultural Labourer, Susan Labbett, aged 60, William Labbett, aged 19,and Fanny Labbett, aged 13, and the whole hpusehold was recorded as born in Devon.

John and Grace had at least three children. Click for further information of these children..

For the 1851 census John and Grace were recorded living in the High Street, Crediton. John Madge was recorded as a aged 41, an Agricultural Labourer and Ann Madge as aged 43, and included in the household were their 3 children, William Madge aged 8, Ann Madge aged 6, and Elizabeth Madge aged 3. There was also a Lodger included in the household, a George Holsgrove, a Chelsea Pensioner. No age was given for George but as with the rest of the household his place of birth was given as Crediton.

Of their three children William Madge aged 19, a Shoemaker, and Ann Madge, aged 17 employed as a Bookbinder were included in the household, and as before the household were all recorded as born in Crediton. Elizabeth their younger daughter, missing from this census, was probably one and the same as the Elizabeth Madge listed in the household of William Lee, a Baker in High Street, Crediton, and recorded as aged 13, a Baker's Servant, born in Crediton.

There is a record in the BMD index of a Grace Madge, aged 68, dying in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1875 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 379). There is also a corresponding burial of a Grace Madge, of Crediton, on the 26 September 1875, aged 62, in the Crediton Parish register. For the census of 1851 Samuel and Susan were living in High Street, Crediton with their children, William and Sarah Ann, with Samuel recorded as an Agricultural Labourer.

For the census of 1861 Samuel and Susan's family has grown with the additions of Emma, James, Samuel and John. Susan's widowed mother Sarah Manley was living with them and Samuel is now listed as Mason's Labourer. This is presumably linked to his deceased Father in Law's trade of Mason.

James Strong was recorded as aged 45, still a Mason's Labourer and her daughter Emma Strong was recorded as aged 39 still a Dressmaker, with both listed as born in Crediton. There were 4 of their children recorded in the household, Florence E. Strong aged 11, Bertie John Strong aged 5, Lilly Strong aged 3 and Frederick J. Susan Madge - born on 9 March 1823 in Crediton. Click for further information of these children..

For the 1841 census Susan was recorded in the family home as Susan Madge, aged 17, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Devon.

There is a record in the Crediton Parish Register of the marriage of a Susan Madge, a weaver aged 22, daughter of William Madge, a husbandman, to a George Strong, a husbandman aged 23, son of John Strong a husbandman on 24 November 1844 in Crediton. There is a corresponding record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the October-December quarter of 1844 of a George Strong to a Susan Madge (Crediton Vol 10 Page 104).

George Strong was probably the son of John Strong and Elizabeth Treble baptised 16 July 1820 in Crediton, Devon.

George and Susan had at least eight children.

For the 1851 census George and Susan were living in St Lawernce Green, Crediton, along with their 4 children, Ellen aged 5, John aged 4, Henry aged 2, and Ema (Emma) aged 1. George was recorded as aged 32, a Agricutural Labourer, and Susan as aged 31, a Serge Weaver. The whole household was recorded as born in Crediton.

Sometime circa 1859 George and Susan moved across the Bristol Channel to Newport where they were recorded for the 1861 census living in Charles Street. George aged 40 was listed as a Labourer and Susan aged 39 as a Labourer's Wife. There were 8 children identified in their household, Ellen aged 15, a House Servant, John aged 13, a Labourer in a Nail Factory, Henry aged 11, also a Labourer in a Nail Factory, Emma aged 9, a Scholar, James aged 7 a Scholar, Eliza aged 5 a Scholar, Jane aged 3 a Scholar, and baby Mary Ann aged 11 months. The family were identified as born in Crediton, with the exception of baby Mary Ann who was identified as born in Newport, Monmouthshire. One wonder's if Joseph's sister's move to Newport influence his later move to Newport.

There is a record in the BMD index of a Susan Strong, aged 51, dying in Newport, Monmouthshire, in the July-September quarter of 1874 (Newport M. Vol 11a Page 105) which is almost certainly "our" Susan Strong, nee Madge.

For the census of 1881 the widowed George Strong was living with his eldest daughter Ellen Gardener in 4 Upper Alma St, St Woollos, Newport, Monmouthshire. George was recorded as aged 62, with no occupation, born in Crediton. Ellen Gardener was recorded as the head of the household, married, aged 33, a Dressmaker, born in Crediton. Included in the household was her daughter Elsie aged 2, born in Newport, and her sister in law Sarah Gardener, aged 22, a Dressmaker, born in Abbotsbury, Dorset. David, her husband, was not recorded as present and no obvious record of him for this census has been found. However using the age and place of birth of Sarah his sister I believe he was born in Abbotsbury, Wymouth the April-June quarter of 1846 quarter of 1846 the son of Thomas Gardiner, an Agricultural Labourer and Elizabeth Gardiner. There was a subsequent baptism recorded for David on 31 May 1846, Abbotsbury, Dorset. There is a record of an Ellen Strong marrying a David Gardner in the July-September quarter of 1877 in Newport, Monmouthshire. ( Newport, M. Vol 11a Page 239).

George was listed as the head of the houshold, aged 73, no occupation, and Emma was recorded as Emma Bradford, his daughter, aged 40. a Green Grocer, with both of them born in Crediton. Included in the household were also 4 of Emma's children, Susan E. aged 13, Edith A. aged 8, Bertha aged 4, and Arthur J. aged 1, all listed as born in Abercarn, Monmouthshire. Emma Strong married John Bradford in the January-March quarter of 1874 in Newport, Monmouthshire. (Newport M Vol 11a Page 326). Her husband John missing from this household was listed at Crumlin Road, Penmain, Monmouthshire, recorded as a "Licensed Victualler", and listed with him were a the reaminder of the couples children, George aged 16 born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Frederick aged 10 and Albert aged 5. Along with a servent Emma's sister, Jane Strong, listed as a Visitor, aged 30, born in Crediton, Devonshire, was also recorded at the Crumlin Road address.

Jane Madge - born on 31 July 1825 in Crediton. Click for further information of these children..

For the 1841 census Jane was recorded in the family home as Jane Madge, aged 16, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Devon.

There is a record in the Crediton Parish Register of the marriage of a Jane Madge, a maidservant, aged 21, daughter of William Madge, a husbandman, to a James Elstone (widow), a shoemaker aged 24, son of George Elstone, a shoemaker, on 22 July 1843 in Crediton. There is a corresponding record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1843 of a James Elston to a Jane Madge (Crediton Vol 10 Page 103).

James Elstone was probably the son of George Elstone and Sarah Shepherd, baptised 24 May 1818, Crediton, Devon

I believe James Elston originally married a Eliza. (Possibly Colesworthy - July-September 1839 Exeter Vol 10 Page 107). James had at least one child by his first wife, George born in Crediton and baptised 23 February 1840. For the 1841 census James, aged 23, a Shoemaker, and Eliza, aged 30, were recorded in Park Street, Crediton along with baby George aged 1. There were two additional children in the household, William Herbert aged 9 and Mary Herbert aged 5. At this moment in time their relationship to James or Eliza, if any, is unknown. It would seem that Eliza passed away the following year, probably in Crediton in the January-March quarter of 1842 (Crediton Vol 10 Page 59).

Jane Madge and James Elston had at least ten children.

For the 1851 census James Elston and Jane were listed as living in Dean Street, Crediton, James was recorded as aged 33, a Cordwainer, with Jane recorded as aged 27, a Cordwainer's Wife. Also included in the household were 3 children, George aged 10, (hJames's son from his first marriage), James aged 3, and Emma aged 1. The whole family were identified as born in Crediton. The son George was I believe the son of James Elston and Eliza (possibly Colesworthy) James

For the census of 1881 the widowed James Elston was living in Mount Pleasant, Crediton.(Mount Pleasant was I suspect still Park Street as per prior 1871 address and later 1891 address). James was recorded as aged 63, a Shoemaker, and 3 of his children were still listed in his household, Lavinia aged 16, a Housekeeper, along with John aged 14 and Henry aged 11, both identified as Scholars. George Madge - born on 20 Jul 1828 in Crediton. Click for further information of these children..

For the 1841 census George Madge was absent from the family home. I believe he was recorded in Crediton, but in the household of Samuel Glandfield, a Cordwainer, as there is a record of a George Madge, aged 12, an Apprentice, born in Devon, which would fit with his later profession.

For the 1851 census George Madge recorded in the family home as Samuel Madge, aged 22, a Cordwainer, born in Crediton..

On the now defunct Madge Family History Website there was a record of a George Madge, a shoemaker marrying a Martha Thorne, a glover in 1852 in Crediton. There is a corresponding record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1852 of a George Madge to a Martha Thorne(Crediton Vol 5b Page 694).

Martha Thorne was probably the daughter of Thomas Thorne and Elizabeth Lee, baptised 16 September 1827, Crediton, Devon.George Madge and Martha Thorn had at least 7 children -

Records for the 1861 census show George and Martha Madge living in Dean Street, Crediton. George Madge was recorded as aged 34, a Cordwainer, and Martha Madge as also aged 34, both born in Crediton. Included in the household were 4 children, Mary Ann aged 8, Charls aged 6, and twins Frank and Harry, aged 4, all identified as born in Crediton.

Records for the 1871 census the family were again listed as living in Dean Street, Crediton. Although the head of the household was recorded as James Madge I am certain that this was a clerical error, as evrything else matches the previous 1861 and forthcoming 1881 census. James (George) was recorded as aged 42, a Cordwainer, and Martha his wife as aged 44 a Boot Closer. Included in the household were 6 children, Mary Ann aged 18, a Factory Worker, Charls aged 16, a Shoemaker, Frank aged 13, a Shoemaker, a second set of twins, Eliza and Emma aged 5, both Scholars, and baby Fanny aged 2. Once again all the family were identified as born in Crediton. Harry, Frank's twin brother would seem to have died in 1869, as there is a record of the death of a Harry Madge aged 11 in Crediton in the January-March quarter of 1869 which would fit with this possibility. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 304). There is a record of the death of a George Madge in the Western Morning News Devon, of 2 Feb 1869 viz. "DEATH FROM STONE-THROWING - A little boy named George Madge died Crediton on Sunday from the effects of wound the head caused stone having been thrown at him by another boy a fortnight ago while the two were playing marbles, when quarrel arose between them." Although this reports gives the name of the boy as George, I wonder if this is actually Harry's demise that was being reported and the forename was mis-reported. (Confusion with the father's name George?) Certainly there seem to be only two deaths with the surname Madge in the BMD Index for the 1869, one of which is the aforementioned Harry and the other is for a William Henry Madge aged 0. (Both in the January-March quarter). Only the beginning of this article has been seen by me. Possibly the complete article (available vie the GenesReuntied website would provide further detail.)

There is a record in the BMD index of a Martha Madge, aged 73, dying in Crediton in the January-March quarter of 1903 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 289). There is also a corresponding burial of a Martha Madge, of Crediton, on the 1 February 1903, aged 73, in the Crediton Parish register. This is almost certainly "our" Martha Madge, nee Thorne.

There is a record in the BMD index of a George Madge, aged 74, dying in Crediton in the January-March quarter of 1907 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 340). Mary Madge - born on 11 September 1831 in Crediton.

As far as can be established although Mary married twice there were no surviving offspring to either union.

For the 1841 census Mary was recorded in the family home as Mary Madge, aged 9, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Devon.

For the 1851 census Mary was recorded in the family home as Mary Madge, aged 19, an Boot Binder, born in Crediton, Devon.

There is a record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1852 of a Mary Madge to a James Bolt. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 695).

James Bolt was probably the son of William Bolt and Sarah Coles, baptised 31 March 1823, Crediton, Devon.

For the census of 1861 James and Mary were recorded in Dean Street, Crediton. James Bolt was recorded as aged 38, a Cordwainer, with Mary recorded as Mary Bolt, wife, aged 34, with both identified as born in Crediton.

There is a death of a James Bolt aged 49 recorded in the BMD Indexes for January-March quarter of 1873 in Crediton which I believe to be Mary's husband. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 300 [or 800?]). There is also a corresponding burial of a James Bolt, of Crediton, on the 2 February 1873, aged 49, in the Crediton Parish register.

I believe Mary remarried the following year to a Richard Reed as there is a record of a Mary Bolt marrying a Richard Reed in the BMD Indexes for July-September quarter of 1874 in Exeter. (Exeter Vol 5b Page 185).

Richard Reed was probably the son of George Reed and Ann ???????, baptised 28 July 1819 Whitestone, Devon. I believe Richard Reed had originally married a Charlotte Cross as there is a record of a Richard Reed marrying a Charlotte Cross in the BMD Indexes for July-September quarter of 1844 in St Thomas. (St Thomas Vol 10 Page 361). See Addendum at end.

For the census of 1881 Mary and Ricard were listed in Dean Street, Devon. Richard Reed was recorded as aged 60, a Shoe Maker, born in Whitestone, Devon, and Mary Reed, his wife as aged 50, born in Crediton. Sophy Reed, Richards daughter by his first wife was included in their household, aged 21 and identified as born in Ide.

Richard's daughter, Sophy Reed, now aged 31 and employed as a Shoe Fitter, identified as born in Ide was still included in their household.

I believe Richard probably died in Crediton in 1892 as there is a record in the BMD Indexes of the death of a Richard Reed aged 75 in Crediton in the January-March quarter of 1891 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 369). There is also a corresponding burial of a Richard Reed, of Crediton, on the 7 January 1891, aged 75, in the Ide Parish register.

I believe Mary Reed, previously Bolt, nee Madge probably died in Crediton in 1898 as there is a record in the BMD Indexes of the death of a Mary Reed aged 68 in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1898 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 262). There is also a corresponding burial of a Mary Reed, of Crediton, on the 2 September 1898, aged 68, in the Crediton Parish register.

Addendum - For the census of 1861 Richard and his fiest wife Charlotte were recorded living in Alphington in Devon. Richard Reed was recorded as aged 41, a Boot and Shoe Maker, born in Whitestone, Devon, and Charlotte Reed, as aged 39, born in Topsham, Devon. Included in the household were 3 of their children, Ann Reed aged 15, a Scholar, William Reed aged 14, a Scholar, and Sophy Reed, aged 1. All the children were identified as born in Ide, Devon.

There is also a corresponding burial of a Charlotte Reed, of Crediton, on the 10 March 1872, aged 50, in the Ide Parish register.

James Madge - born on 15 June 1834 in Crediton.

On the now defunct Madge Family History Website there was a record of the marriage of a James Madge, a mason's labourer aged 22, son of William Madge a labourer to an Ellen Harvey, a glover aged 20, daughter of James Harvey a shoemaker in 1857 in Crediton. There is a corresponding record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the April-June quarter of 1857 of a James Madge to a Ellen Harvey (Crediton Vol 5b Page 724)

Ellen Harvey was probably the daughter of James Harvey and Sarah Rodgers baptised 7 October 1838 in Crediton, Devon.

James Madge and Elizabeth Harvey had 1 known child Click for further information of these children..

Sadly Ellen Madge died in Crediton in the October-December quarter of 1860. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 265). and there is a corresponding record of her burial, aged 22 on 7 October 1860 in the Crediton Parish records..

There is a record in the BMD index of the marriage in Exeter in the January-March quarter of 1861 of a James Madge to a Elizabeth Harvey (Exeter Vol 5b Page 181). Elizabeth Harvey was probably the daughter of James Harvey and Sarah Rodgers baptised 5 April 1836 in Crediton, Devon, the elder sister of James Madge's first wife Ellen.

James and Elizabeth had seven known children Click for further information of these children..

For the census of 1861 James Madge and his new bride Elizabeth were recorded living in East Street, Crediton. James was listed as aged 25, a Mason's Labourer, and Elizabeth as aged 24. Included in the household were William aged 3, James's son by Ellen and an Elizabeth Harvey, listed as daughter. It would seem that Elizabeth had had a child (?by a William Bolt?), Elizabeth Mary Harvey born in Crediton in the April-June quarter of 1857. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 376), and this was her. All the household were identified as born in crediton

There is a record in the BMD index of the marriage in Crediton in the October-December quarter of 1869 of a Harriet Madge to a Richard Emmett. (Crediton Vol 5b Page 768). (Richard's surname would seem to have actually been Hammett).

Richard and Harriet had two known children -

For the 1881 census Harriett and Richard were living at Bowden Hill, Crediton. Richard Hammett was recorded as aged 44, a Boot and Shoe Finisher, and harriet, his wife, as aged 45, a Boot Binder. The census also includes the fact that she had had 2 children both of whom survived.
