John Madge and Grace Labbett had at least three children:

William Madge born about 1842, Crediton.

Probably the William Madge whose birth was recorded in the BMD Index for Crediton for the January-March quarter of 1842. (Crediton Vol 10 Page 84)

There is a record the baptism of a William Madge to John and Grace Madge - baptised 30 January 1842, Crediton

For the census of 1861 recorded in the family household aged 19, a Shoemaker, born in Crediton. Nothing more known at this time.

Ann Madge born about 1843, Crediton.

Probably the Ann Madge whose birth was recorded in the BMD Index for Crediton for the October-December quarter of 1843. (Crediton Vol 10 Page 81).

There is a record the baptism of an Ann Madge to John and Grace Madge - baptised 18 October 1843.

For the census of 1861 recorded in the family household aged 17, a Bookbinder, born in Crediton. Nothing more known at this time.

Elizabeth Madge born about 1847.

Probably the Elizabeth Madge whose birth was recorded in the BMD Index for Crediton for the July-September quarter of 1847 (Crediton Vol 10 Page 71).

There is a record the baptism of a Elizabeth Madge to John and Grace Madge - baptised 19 September 1847, Crediton

Missing from the 1861 census. Probably the Elizabeth Madge listed in the household of William Lee, a Baker in High Street, Crediton, recorded as aged 13, a Baker's Servant, born in Crediton. Back in the family household for the census of 1871, recorded as aged 13, a Lozenge Manufacturer, born in Crediton.

It is possible that Elizabeth Madge married a John Welsford, in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1872.(Crediton Vol 5b Page 724).

For the 1881 census this couple were listed at 7 Beaufort Place, St James Inn Bristol. John Welsford was recorded as aged 33, a Boot Maker, born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and Elizabeth Welsford, as aged 33, also Boot Maker, born in Crediton. Also recorded in the household were 3 children, William Henry Welsford aged 7 born in Crediton, Charles E. Welsford aged 3 born in Bristol, and Albert J. Welsford aged 2 born in Bristol. Also included in the household were two lodgers, Frank Madge aged 23, a Boot Rivetter, born in Crediton, and Harry Oldridge, aged 22, also a Boot Rivetter, born in Mewton, Devon. I would suspect that the Frank Madge - Lodger, in this census is actually Frank Madge baptised 28 May 1857 son of George Madge and Martha Thorn (see below) and therefore Elizabeth's cousin.

For the 1891 census the couple were still listed 7 Beaufort Place, Lower Montague, St James Bristol. John Welsford was recorded as aged 47, a Boot Maker (Laster) working on own accord, born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and Elizabeth Welsford, as aged 43, a Boot Machinist, born in Crediton. Also recorded in the household were 4 children, William H. Welsford aged 17, a Hair Dressers Assistant, born in Crediton, Charles E. Welsford aged 15, also a Hair Dressers Assistant, born in Bristol, Albert J. Welsford aged 12, a Scholar, born in Bristol, and Alice Welsford aged 8, a Scholar, born in Bristol.

For the census of 1901 the couple were listed in Montague, St James Bristol. John Welsford was recorded as aged 53, a Shoemaker, born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and Elizabeth Welsford, as aged 53, born in Crediton. Their 4 children were still all recorded in the household, Wm Hy. Welsford aged 27, a Hair Dresser, born in Crediton, Chas Edwin Welsford aged 15, also a Hair Dresser, born in Bristol, Albert Jno Welsford aged 22, a Pawnbroker's Assistant, born in Bristol, and Alice Welsford aged 18, a Coat Machinist, born in Bristol. There were also three boarders included in the household, Frank Downes, aged 27, a French polisher, born in Portishead, Somerset, Amelia Hurst aged 78 born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and Sarah Mccormach aged 59. no place of birth given?.

For the census of 1911 John and Elizabeth were again listed at 7 Beaufort Place, Montague, St James Bristol, with the additional information that the dwelling consisted of 2 rooms. The couple were recorded as having been married for 39 years and having had 4 children, all of whom were still living. John Welsford was recorded as aged 64, a Boot Repairer working at home, born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and Elizabeth Welsford, as aged 62, born in Crediton. Included in the household was a Lillian Crewe, recorded as granddaughter, aged 10, born in Bristol. I believe Lillian was born Lilian Welsford in Bristol in the July-September quarter of 1901. (Bristol Vol 6a Page 214). It would seem that Alice Welsford and Stephen Crewe were married in Bristol in the July-September quarter of 1903. (Bristol Vol 6a Page 107).

I believe Elizabeth Welsford died in Bristol in 1912 as there is a record in the BMD Index of the death of an Elizabeth Welsford in Bristol in the January-March quarter of 1912, aged 64, (Bristol Vol 6a Page 38). I believe John Welsford died in Bristol in 1928 as there is a record in the BMD Index of the death of a John Welsford in Bristol in the October-December quarter of 1928, aged 81, (Bristol Vol 6a Page 75).
