Richard and Harriet had two known children:
Laura Hammett born about 1872, Crediton.
Probably the Laura Hammett whose birth was recorded in the BMD Index for Crediton for the April-June quarter of 1872 (Crediton 5b 409).
Laura married Frederick John Bennellick in Crediton in the July-September quarter of 1894 (Crediton Vol 5b Page 743).
For the census of 1901 Laura was listed in Bowden Hill, Crediton in the household of her mother, Harriet Hammet. Laura was identified as Laura Bennellick, Daughter aged 28, and also recorded in the household were her two children, Frederick aged 5, and Elsie A. aged 2, identified as grandchildren, both born in Crediton. Laura's "missing" husband Frederick was listed lodging in London St George The Martyr, London, recorded as Frederick J. Bennellick aged 28, a Boot maker, born in Crediton.
For the census of 1911 the family were listed in Cambridge Road, Crowthorne, Berkshire, in a dwelling with 5 rooms. Frederick John Bennellick was recorded as aged 38, an Attendant Bootmaker at Broadmoor Asylum and his wife Laura Bennellick as aged 37, both born in Crediton. There were 5 children recorded in the household, Frederick William Bennellick aged 15, a Bookseller's Assistant, born in Crediton, Elsie Alice Bennellick aged 11, born in Crediton, Nellie Bennellick aged 7, born in Southwark, London, Richard Walter Bennellick aged 5, born in Tooting, London and baby Laura Bennellick aged 6 months, born in Crowthorne, Berkshire. The census identified the couple as having been married for 16 years and having had 6 children, one of whom had died.
Edith Mary Hammett born about 1875, Crediton.
Probably the Edith Mary Hammett whose birth was recorded in the BMD Index for Crediton for the July-September quarter of 1875 (Crediton 5b 395).
Edith Mary married Lewis Henry Hammett in Exeter in the July to September quarter of 1897. (Exeter Vol 5b Page 188).
For the census of 1901 the couple were listed at Bowden Hill, Crediton, with Lewis H. recorded as aged 24, a Fitter and Machinist in the Boot trade, and Edith M. recorded as aged 25, both born in Crediton. Included in the household were two children, Henry aged 3, and Gertrude aged 1, both born Crediton, Devonshire.
For the census of 1911 the family were listed at 12 The Green, Crediton, with Lewis Henry recorded as aged 34, a General Machinist in a Boot Factory, and Edith Mary recorded as aged 35, both born in Crediton. Included in the household were four children, Henry Richard aged 13, William John aged 9, Ella Joyce aged 5 and Albert Thomas aged 1, all born Crediton, Devonshire. The census identified that the couple had been married for 14 years and had had 5 children, one of whom had died, which one would account for Gertrude aged 1 in the 1891 census but missing from this census. Also included in the household was Harriet Hammett, Edith's mother, although she is recorded as a "Boarder", aged 77, widowed and born in Crediton. The cesus also includes the fact that she had had 2 children both of whom survived.
