Children of Robert MacDonald and Louisa Geddes married 15 August 1858, St. Giles, Middlesex.

Henry MacDonald, born 1858 in Dover, Kent.

Henry MacDonald was born in 1858 with the birth recorded in the January-March quarter of that year in the registration district of Dover, Kent. He seems to have been known as Harry.

Marriage - Harry married Emma Snow on 22 January 1887 in Camberwell, London. Emma was born about 1867 in Walworth.

Harry and Emma had the following known children:

For the census of 1891 Harry and his family were recorded resident at 73 Broxfield Road, Lewisham, London. I am confident this is the correct family although Harry's wife was called Emma not Georgina I suspect it is possible that his sister Georgina was with the family at this time and got included as Harry's wife and Emma missed off??

On 6 March Harry and Emma had a further daughter, Gladys Winifred, but sadly only a month later they lost their eldest son Harry who died on 13 April 1904 in Edmonton. Worse was to come as their father Harry seems to have died two years later in 1906 as there is the death of a Harry McDonald aged 49 registered in the Oct-Dec quarter of that year in Edmonton (3a 287). This must have been a disaster leaving Emma with seven young children to raise on her own.

For the census of 1911 the widowed Emma was living at 15 Ashwell Grove, Edmonton, and working as a charwoman.

Robert, a merchant, married Ada Maud Hunt, the daughter of Thomas Hunt and Caroline Lewry on 14 May 1902 in London. Ada was born on 21 November 1878 in Bromley, Kent. I believe the couple emigrated to Canada in 1904. Robert and Ada had the following children:

For the census of 30 June 1906 the family were recorded in Calgary, Alberta. Robert was recorded as aged 43, Ada as aged 28, Kathleen as aged 3, all born in England, with the infant Marguerite listed as born in Manitoba. Rbert was identified as having come to Canada in 1904, with Ada and his daughter Kathleen joining him in 1905.

For the census of 1911 Robert, his wife and now 3 daughters were still resident in Calgary. The family identified as Rob. W. McDonald aged 46, born January 1865 in England; Ada M. Mcdonald aged 31 born in November 1880 in England; Kathleen aged 8 born March 1903 in England; Marguerite aged 5 born in March 1906 in Manitoba, Canada; Winnifred aged 4 born in May 1907 in Alberta, Canada. Robert waas listed as an Auditor.

For the census of 1921 Robert, and his family had moved to British Columbia and were recorded at Railway Avenue, Armstrong. The family identified as Rob. W. McDonald aged 57, born in England of English parents, working for a shipping company; Ada M. Mcdonald aged 42 born in England of English parents; Kathleen aged 18 born in England of English parents, working as a Stenographer; Marguerite aged 15 born in Manitoba, Canada of English parents; Winnifred aged 14 born in Alberta, Canada of English parents. The two younger daughters were listed as students and the census confirms that Robert had come over to Canada in 1904 to be followed by Ada and kathleen in 1905

Robert William MacDonald died on 2 June 1960 in Armstrong, British Columbia, Canada. Ada Maud McDonald, nee Hunt, died on 5 April 1965 in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada.

In 1897 Alexander secondly married Mary Catherine McGraw on 28 December 1897 in Edinburgh. Mary was born on 16 October 1874 in St Giles, Edinburgh the daughter of Mark McGraw and Elizabeth Keelin. Alexander and Catherine had two children:

It would seem from information from descendents of Alexander's son by his first marriage that Alexander's this second marriage was bigamous. The 1901 census show Mary living with her son Maurice at 3 Bruce Grove, Watford St Andrews, London. The fact that she is still recording herself as married but as "living by own means" would suggest that Alexander had not divorced her prior to his second marriage but was no longer living in the family home. Also recorded is Mary Jane's sister Fanny Brook, aged 28, a dressmaker, born in Uxbridge, Middlesex.

Alexander John MacDonald

Five years after this census according to a letter written on 9th April 1906 by his Alexander's Uncle Henry in Texas to his Uncle Roderick in Australia Alexander's address was "3 Bruce Grove, Watford, Hertfordshire, England".

At some point around this time Alexander's deception was discovered by Mary. Exposed, Alexander chose to leave Mary and Maurice and set up with his "other" wife and their son George Kenneth.

Subsequently, on 5 November 1910 Maurice L. McDonald embarked on the SS. Dominion in Liverpool for Canada. Ten days later he disembarked in Quebec to start a new life as a mechanic going to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Shortly after Mary, his mother, also crossed the Atlantic to join him, and in 1911 the pair were recorded living in Montreal for the census of that year .

For the census of 1911 back in England her erstwhile husband Alexander was recorded as boarding in the household of Charles Church, a dairyman, at the Village Dairy, East Barnet. Also recorded are his "wife" Kathleen, (should be Catherine), and their son George Kenneth McDonald. The census recorded the pair as having been married for 14 years and having had two children, with only one surviving. Alexander is recorded as a self-employed journalist, and gives his place of birth as Inverness rather than London. Was this and Catherine's name being given as Kathleen simple mistakes or the signs of an uneasy consience?

I believe Georgina died in 1942 with the death recorded in the April-June quarter of that year in the registration district of Maidstone, Kent.

Roderick MacDonald, born in 1873 in Peckham, Surrey.

Roderick James MacDonald was born in 1873 in with the birth recorded in the October-December quarter of that year in the registration district of Camberwell, Surrey. He was identified on his birth certificate as born on 20 November 1873, at 5 Camden Terrace, Albert Grove, Peckham, Surrey, the son of Robert McDonald, a Warehouse Clerk, and Louisa Geddes, with the informant being L. McDonald, his mother. According to details with two contained in two letters written by his grandfather Robert McDonald, back in Inverness, to his son Roderick who was in Melbourne, Australia, it sounds like his birth was somewhat traumatic. The first, dated 16 December 1873, states - "Robert's wife was poorly, but now she is recovering though slowly. She had a baby about a month ago, & they thought that she would not live. Now we have to say that the baby is a stout boy, & they compliment you by giving him your name. She says in her letter that he is a good & quiet child and does not give any trouble to her.". The second, dated 10 March 1874, states - "We wrote to you since about Robert's youngest son, who was to be named after you, & now we have to let you know that he was named & baptised in the last week of January last, Roderick James. He is thriving & fit & stout for his age.". Roderick was indeed baptised on 28 January 1874 in the parish of Battle Bridge, Islington, Middlesex, along with his elder sister, Georgina.

For the 1901 census Roderick was at 7 Agnew Road, Lewisham, London with his wife Florence.

For the census of 1911 Roderick and Florence were living at 11 Beckford Road, Croydon, what would seem to be a few days away from Roderick's mother Louisa who was recorded at 15 Beckford Road. George Benwell, Florence's widowed father is living with them, and the couple were recorded as having been married for 12 years but as having had no children.

Name Relationship Age Occupation Where Born
Roderick James McDonald Head 37 Traveller Peckham,London
Florence McDonald Wife - 12 years 35   Woolwich, London
George Benwell Father in law 76 Widower Hadley, Middlesex

I believe Roderick and Florence emigrated to Canada in 1912 as sadly the next record we have is of the death of Florence from pneumonia on 11 October 1914 in Yarmouth, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. She was identified as aged 38, born in England, the daughter of George Benwell and Hannah Howard.

It would appear that Roderick remarried on 1 February 1919 as there is a record of the marriage of a Roderick James McDonald, a 45 year old widower, a R.R. (Railroad?) Employee, born in London, England, to a Emily Clements, a 39 year old spinster, born in Halstead, Essex, England, with the couple both being residents of Bridgeburg, Fort Erie, Canada. Roderick's parents are identified as Robert McDonald and Elizabeth Gibson. Obviously for this to be "our" Roderick the mother's name should be Louisa Geddes. However I am confident that the marriage certificate is wrong as to the name of Roderick's mother and it should be Louisa Geddes, based on the fact that on the later death certificate of Roderick James McDonald, husband of Emily McDonald, his date and place of birth are given as 20 November 1873, England which matches with the date and place of birth of Roderick James McDonald, identified on his birth certificate as the son of Robert McDonald and Louisa Geddes. Emily's parents were recorded correctly as James Clements and Mary S. Golding and there is a record of the birth of an Emily Louise Golding recorded in the April-June quarter of 1879 in the registration district of Halstead, Essex.

There is a record of Roderick and Emily in the 1921 census in Bridgeburg, Ontario. Roderick was identified as Roderick James McDonald aged 48, a Janitor employed by the Railway, born in England of a Scottish father and an English mother, having come to Canada in 1912. Emily was listed as Emily McDonald aged 41, born in England of a English father and an English mother, also having come to Canada in 1912. Interestingly there is a son listed in the household, Kenneth Roderick McDonald, aged 7, born in Ontario of a English father and an English mother, which would appear to be son of Roderick and his first wife Florence.

The is a record of the death of Roderick on 26 December 1937 at 257 Dufferen, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. He was identified as a Caretaker, aged 64 years 1 month and 6 days, born on 20 November 1873 in England, the wife of Emily McDonald. His father's name was given as James McDonald and his mother's name was listed as "Unknown". However as already stated the date of birth and location tallies with the birth of "our" Roderick James McDonald which identifies his parents as Robert McDonald and Louisa Geddes.

It is believed Emily Louise McDonald, nee Clements, died in 1961 in Ontario, Canada.
