OTHER EBENEZER HENDRYS OF ALLOA

Ebenezer Hendry who married Janet Blackwood

There was an Ebenezer Hendry who married Janet Blackwood on 10th May 1771 in Tillicoultry, with banns read also in Clackmannan. Five children were recorded as born to them in the Parish Registers of Clackmannan, with a sixth (and final?) child recorded in the Parish Register of Alloa. The birth\baptism record of their third recorded child Ebenezer, identifies Ebenezer, the father, as a weaver.

Ebenezer Hendry who married a Margaret Fulton

There is a further Ebenezer Hendry who married a Margaret Fulton on 4th December 1784 in Alloa.

Ebenezer Hendry and Margaret Fulton had the births of five children recorded in the Alloa Parish Register.

ANN 22 JAN 1786 ALLOA ISOBELL ** 9 JAN 1793 ALLOA
ALEXANDER 10 FEB 1788 ALLOA ANDREW 17 AUG 1800 ALLOA
MARY 16 FEB 1790 ALLOA

** Isabella died 10 February 1858 at Kirkgate, Alloa aged 64, and was buried in the churchyard at Alloa. Her parents were given as Ebenezer Hendry, a Cotton Weaver, and Margaret Fulton. The informant was Isabella Sutherland, Sick-Nurse.

I am aware of research available on the internet that suggests that this Ebenezer went on to marry Margaret Donaldson presumably after the death of his first wife. However as I believe that the Ebenezer who married Margaret Donaldson was in fact born around about 1782 this proves and the Ebenezer that married Margaret Fulton would have been born about 1764 I am disclined to accept this theory.

HOWEVER......

...... on the basis that there is rarely smoke without fire, is it possible that the original information may have simply been that that the Ebenezer who married Margaret Fulton was married twice? An assumption was made that the second marriage post dated the marriage to Margaret Fulton and Margaret Donaldson was selected as a likely candidate?

Could this other marriage have been prior to the marriage to Margaret Fulton, and could it have been to the aforementioned Janet Blackwood? Certainly Ebenezer Hendry and Janet Blackwood's last recorded child, William, was born 31st July 1783. Could it be that Janet had died during or shortly after the birth of William and Ebenezer subsequently remarried to Margaret Fulton, a year and a half later? Certainly the death certificate Ebenezer and Margaret's fourth recorded child Isabella identifies her father as a "cotton weaver", so certainly the two Ebenezers had the same occupation.

If anyone can help either prove or disprove this theory or even wishes to comment I would be delighted to hear from them!

Possible ancestry of the Ebenezer Hendry who married Janet Blackwood

As to the birth and parents of this Ebenezer Hendry who married Janet Blackwood, he must have been born circa 1741-1751 going by the date of his wedding, and there is an Ebenezer Hendry born to John Hendry and Isobel Alexander on 9th April 1742 in Tillicoultry, who would fit the bill nicely.

Further credence may be given to this possibility by the fact that the Ebenezer Hendry who married Janet Blackwood called his first son, often called after his paternal grandfather, John, and this would fit, plus he called second daughter Isobel, which would match the maternal grandmother's name.

No record of the marriage of John Hendry and Isobel Alexander has been found as yet in any of the Clackmannanshire Parish Registers, but the birth of one other child, George, on 27th September 1747, is recorded in the Parish Register of Tillicoultry.

It is interesting to speculate that the likelihood of this John Hendry and Isobel Alexander having a son John, circa 1740 is fairly high, and that this son John if he existed would fit as the future spouse of Margaret Neil, and father of "our" Ebenezer.

This of course is more than just a little speculative !!!
