Janet Findlay born on 19 Jul 1797 in Forres.

Janet married John Roy on 11 Jul 1818 in Forres, Moray. John Roy was born on 4 September 1795 in Forres the son of John Roy, a tailor, and Janet Ross. John Roy and Janet Ross were married on 27 January 1787 in Forres and had at least another two children: - James Roy, baptised 5 November 1787 and Janet Roy born on 10 June 1793 both in Forres, Moray.
Janet Findlay and John Roy had the following known children:

For the census of 1841 Janet and John and their youngest daughter were living in a close of High Street, Forres.

Name Age Occupation Where Born
Hellen Carmichael 35 Independent Yes
Hellen Roy 15 Female Servant Yes

Interestingly their eldest daughter Janet was recorded as a servant in the household of Janet Murray aged 70, a washerwoman, in Nairneís Close Forres. Unfortunately no relationships are given in the 1841 census nor exact ages or place of births, but it would seem highly likely that this Janet Murray was actually Janetís grandmother, widow of James Findlay, Cartwright. It was not uncommon for widows in Scotland to be recorded by their maiden names after the death of their husband.

Ann Roy Daughter 20 Dressmaker Forres, Morayshire

John Roy died on 29 June 1855 at 68 North Back Street, Forres. With it being an 1855 death certificate not only does it identify his parents as John Roy, a tailor, (deceased) and Jannet Ross (deceased), but also gives his children, This confirms that he and Janet only had the three children, daughters, Jannet aged 32 Hellen aged 30 and Ann aged 24 at the time of his death. It also gives his place of burial as the Churchyard of Forres. For the 1861 his widow Janet was living at 68 North Back Street, Forres with Ann her daughter still living with her. Annís occupation has changed rather dramatically from Dressmaker to Agricultural Labourer!

1861 Census (8 April) Forres Burgh (137) Book 3. Page 12.

For the census of 1871 Janet was living at 77 North Back Street, Forres on her own, her daughter Ann having died of tuberculosis on 27 August 1866 in North Back Street, Forres. She is recorded as supported by her son in law. I assume this would be John Cramond, a saddler, the husband of her daughter Janet Roy.
