Anne Adam nee Young, originally married to William Hossack

Ann Young was Young was christened on 2 Aug 1812 in Cathcart, the daughter of William Young, a master mason and Margaret Patterson. William and Margaret had the following known children (IGI):

Ann married firstly married William Hossack on 6 Jun 1835 in Gorbals, Glasgow. William was born about 1811. The ancestry.co.uk index of the 1851 census lists "Lachet" as his place of birth. As far as I am aware there is no such place. Maybe Tarbet? I suspect a view of the original record might well make sense of this. William died between 1851/1861.

William and Ann would seem to have had the following known children (IGI):

For the census of 1841 Ann and William had moved from Glasgow to Dunfermiline. Their daughter Margaret born in Glasgow in 1836 is not included in the household so may have died in infancy. (This census is derived from the ancestry.co.uk index therefore no occupations or addresses)

For the census of 1851 Ann and William had returned to Glasgow from Dunfermiline (This census is also derived from the ancestry.co.uk index plus GWSFHS Index therefore no occupations or addresses. Also names have been transcribed as Horsack and the places of birth for the two children born in Dunfermiline, Fife ar given as Dumfries, Fife!!)

For the census of 1861 the family are still in Glasgow although William is not included in the household with Ann listed as "Mrs Hossack" and "Head". This would suggest that William had died in the preceding ten years. A brief search of the index of deaths for 1855 to 1861 did not turn up any obvious record of William's death so I suspect he died 1851-1855. (This census is also derived from the ancestry.co.uk index therefore no occupations or addresses)

As stated in the main history on 17 June 1866 Anne married James Adam. At the time of the marriage at 137 Cumberland Street, Hutchesontown.

For the census of 1871 the family are still in Glasgow with Ann married to "our" James Adam. I am not convinced that the Thoams and George listed as step-sons were actually children of Ann and William Hossack as they are not in the previous census. If however they are not step-children why they would be included in this census as such is unexplained.
