Andrew Burns Cowan born 22 Mar 1829, Ayrshire.

Andrew Cowan married Jane Templeton Ferguson on 3 December 1863, Ayr, Ayrshire. Andrew and Jane had the following known children:

For the census of 1881 Andrew and his family were resident in Temple Hill, Troon, Ayrshire. Andrew was recorded as aged 50, a Banker & Coal Agent, born in Troon, Ayrshire, along wife his wife, who was listed as ALICE Templeton Cowan, Wife, aged 42, born in Ayr, Ayrshire. (This was almost certainly Jane but??). Also recorded in the household were their three children - Bessie F. Cowan aged 16, Jessie B. B. Cowan aged 14, and John M. Cowan aged 9, all identified as "Scholars" and born in Troon, Ayr, Ayrshire, and a Domestic servant, Jessie Crawford, aged 21, also born in Troon, Ayrshire.

Andrew Burns Cowan died on 6 Nov 1907 in Viewfield, Troon. He was recorded as a Bank Agent, aged 78, married to Jane Ferguson, the son of John Morrison Cowan, a spirit dealer, and Jane Cowan, maiden name Burns, both listed as deceased. The informant was his son John Morrison Cowan.

Margaret Cowan born 29 May 1831, Ayrshire.

It is believed Margaret may have died in infancy as she was not included with either her mother or father in the 1841 census

John born 13 April 1833, Troon, Ayrshire.

John married Margaret Andrew Adam, daughter of Matthew Adam and Mary Ferrie on 6 Jul 1859 in Ayr, Ayrshire. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

John and Margaret had the following known children:

For the census of 1881 the family were resident at 5 Afton Crescent, Govan, Lanarkshire. John was recorded as aged 42, a Banker, born in Troon, Ayrshire, along with his wife Margaret A. Cowan listed as aged 42, born in Ayr, , Ayrshire. Included in the household were five of their children - John Cowan aged 20, a Bankers Clerk, Andrew B. Cowan aged 15, a Yarn Agents Clerk, Jessie B. Cowan aged 13, a Scholar, Matthew A. Cowan aged 10, a Scholar, and William A.B. Cowan aged 8, a Scholar. All the children were recorded as born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with the exception of Matthew who was recorded as born in Ayr, Ayrshire. One general domestic servant was also listed in the household Margaret Brannigan, aged 18, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

John Cowan died 20 January 1892 at 7 Ashton Place, Hillhead, Glasgow. Margaret Cowan, nee Adam, died on 30 May 1902 also at 7 Ashton Place, Hillhead, Glasgow. Announcements of both deaths were carried in the Glasgow Herald newspaper

James Cowan born 12 April 1835, Troon, Ayrshire.

James married Marion Jane Coulthard 18 September 1866, Central District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

James and Jane had the following known children:

For the census of 1881 James and his family were resident at Fairlight Villa, Maitland Place, Cathcart, Glasgow. James was recorded as aged 45, a Master Brass Founder Master Employing 16 Men and 5 Apprentices, born in Troon, Ayrshire, along with his wife, Marion J. Cowan, aged 38, born in Sligo, Ireland, and his four children - John M. C. Cowan aged 13, James H. Cowan aged 11, Maryann H. Cowan aged 9, and Arthur Cowan aged 6. All were identified "Scholars", and born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Also included in the household was an Ann Matheson, aged 25, a General Domestic Servant, born in Lilmalvag, Skye. James was listed in the Glasgow Post Office directories of this time as James Cowan, Bell & Brass founder, Clydesdale Brass Foundry, 11-13 Hydepark St.)

James Cowan died aged 62 on 13 February 1897 at Fairlight Villa, Maitland Place, Cathcart, Glasgow. At the time of his death James was listed as a Spice and Sauce merchant, somewhat different to his earlier occupation as a Brass Founder! On the death certificate he was recorded as married to Marion Jane Coulthard and the son of John Morrison Cowan, a Spirit Merchant, and Janet Cowan, maiden surname Burns, both identified as deceased. The informant was John M. C. Cowan, son. of 1 Barley park, Dunaskin, by Ayr.

Marion Jane Cowan nee Coulthard died aged 79 on 31 March 1922 at 192 Hyndland Road, Partick, Glasgow. An announcement of her death was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

Jane Cowan born on 19 Apr 1837, Dundonald, Ayrshire.

Jane married James White, a widower, on 27 April 1871, Dundonald, Ayrshire. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

James had initially married to Janet White on 25 Jun 1863 in Dundonald, Ayrshire, and he and Janet had 3 known children: Susan White born on 6 Nov 1864, Robert White born on 25 Aug 1866 and Agnes Barrie White born on 22 Jun 1868, all births registered in Dundonald, Ayrshire. I believe James, a baker, was born about 1834, in Troon, the son of Robert Whyte and Agnes Barry who were married 22 June 1832, in Dundonald, Ayrshire. James and Jane had the following known children:

For the census of 1881 Jane was recorded with her mother at Templehill, Troon, aged 42 and married. Also in the household were her two younger children James White aged 7, and George White aged 3. Her husband James White, identified as a baker aged 46, was also recorded in Templehill, (presumably nearby), in the household of his widowed mother, Agnes White aged 77, born in Ardrossan. Also included in the household were his eldest son, James White, aged 9, his unmarried sister, Eliza White, listed as a Stationer aged 38, and a further grandchild of Agnes's, Susan White, aged 16, all identified as born in Troon, Ayrshire.

James White, died on 19 February 1908, at Vancouver, Victoria Drive, Troon, Ayrshire. Jane White, nee Cowan, died aged 89 in 14 January 1927 at 115 Templehill, Troon, Ayrshire. On the death certificate she was recorded as the widow of James White, a baker, and the daughter John Morrison Cowan, a Spirit Merchant, and Janet Cowan, maiden surname Burns, both identified as deceased. The informant was Robert White, step-son, of Gowanlea, Welbeck Crescent, Troon. Announcements of both deaths were carried in the Glasgow Herald newspaper

Janet Bell Blackwood Cowan born 12 May 1839, Dundonald, Ayrshire.

For the census of 1881 Jessie was recorded with her mother at Templehill, Troon, aged 40 and unmarried. She died, unmarried, aged 93 on 3 January 1933 at 115 Templehill, Troon, Ayrshire. An announcement of her death was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

William Burns Cowan born on 13 Sep 1841 in Troon, Ayrshire.

William B. Cowan, an Iron Salesman, married Elizabeth Wilhelmina Martin on 26 Dec 1871 in Presbyterian Church of St John, Sligo, Ireland. Elizabeth was born about 1853, probably in Sligo, Ireland, the daughter of Thomas Martin and Sarah Mutch. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

Sadly Lizzie Cowan nee Martin died aged 22, on 26 February 1875 at 18 Shaftesbury Terrace, Glasgow, only six days after the birth of her third child. She was identified as married to William Burns Cowan, an Iron Salesman, and the daughter of Thomas Martin, a Seedsman, and Sarah Martin, maiden surname Mutch. The cause of death was "Puerperal Fever 6 days", and The informant was William himself. Ann announcement of her death was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

William B. Cowan scondly married Lillis Douglas Coverly on 16 August 1876, at 24 Queens Square, Strathbungo, Glasgow. Lillias was born 23 November 1848 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, the daughter of William Coverly, a Glass Cutter, and Christina Henderson. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

For the census of 1881 William was recorded living at 34 Queens Square, Govan, Lanarkshire, an Iron Salesman, aged 40, born in Troon, Ayrshire, along with his wife Lillias Douglas Cowan, aged 31, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Included in the household are two of William's children by his first wife, Elizabeth - Louisa McArthur Cowan aged 8, and Jessie Burns Cowan aged 7, both identified as Scholars, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, along with his and Lillias's daughter Christina Henderson Cowan aged 3, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. There were two domestic servants in the household - Jane Virtue aged 18, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Isabella Brown aged 15 a Domestic Nurse, born in Crofthead, Lanarkshire, and a visitor, his mother's sister Margaret Burns, identified as Aunt, aged 60, born in Ayr, Ayrshire. The whereabouts of Lizzie Martin Cowan born 1875 for this census is currently unknown.

Sadly Lillias Douglas Cowan, nee Coverly, died, aged 39 according to her death certificate, on 13 June 1889, at 44 Queens Square, Strathbungo, Glasgow. An announcement of her death was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

William Cowan latterly married Jane Campbell Cameron at the Windsor Hotel in Glasgow on 19 April 1906. I believe Jane was born 10 March 1856 in the Central District of Glasgow, the daughter of Alexander Cameron, an Engine Smith and Margaret Morrison. An announcement of their marriage was carried in the Glasgow Herald the following day.

Jane Campbell Cowan, nee Cameron, died aged 61 according to her death certificate, on 23 November 1922 at 44 Queens Square, Strathbungo, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

William Burns Cowan died, aged 84, on 17 July 1926 also at 44 Queens Square, Strathbungo, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Announcements of both deaths were carried in the Glasgow Herald newspaper
