Adam Grieve married Isabella Beattie on 15 April 1878 in 6 Hill Lane, Newington, Edinburgh. Adam was recorded as aged 29, a Mason, and the son of Walter Grieve, a Woollen Spinner, (deceased), and Mary Grieve, maiden surname Oliver. Isabella was recorded as aged 20, a Warehouse Girl, the daughter of Andrew Beattie, a Tweed Weaver, and Jane Beattie, maiden surname Currie. Adam's address was given as 19 Salisbury Street, Edinburgh, and Isabella's as 3 Green Wynd, Hawick. The marriage was by declaration and the witnesses were William Oliver, a Mason, and Robert Boyce, also a Mason. Isabella was born on 21 April 1859 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. For the census of 1911 Adam and his family were resident at 6 Nelson Street, Edinburgh with Adam now described as a Clerk of Works. Six of the children were still recorded in the household, and Adam and Isabella were listed as having been married for 33 years and having had 11 children - 8 of whom were still surviving, Only nine children of Adam and Isabella have been identified and of those only one Mitchell Grieve born about 1884 was deceased by 1911, having died aged 22 in 1907. There are therefore 2 "missing" children.

Adam Grieve died on 23 January 1917 at 6 Nelson Street, Edinburgh, aged 69. He was identified on the death certificate as a retired Inspector of Works, married to Isabella Beattie, and the son of Walter Grieve, a Hosier, and Mary Grieve, maiden surname Oliver, both listed as deceased. The informant was Jeanie Anderson daughter, of 13 Salisbury Street. I believe Isabella died in 1928 as there is a record of the death of an Isabella Grieve or Beattie, aged 69, in the Scottish BMD index for that year registered in Canongate, Edinburgh.

Mary Oliver Grieve died on 8 October 1944 in 51 Vanderleur Avenue, Edinburgh, Midlothian, aged 64. She was identified as the widow of Frank Kirwin, a Bookkeeper, and the daughter of Adam Grieve, a Mason, and Isabella Grieve, maiden surname Beattie, both listed as deceased. The informant was Jeanie Andreson, sister, who was present. No obvious record of the previous demise of her husband Frank Kirwin or of the couple's marriage has currently been found in the UK, which may suggest they married and he died abroad. (??Canada or Ireland??)

I believe Mary was born in 1884 as there is a record of the birth of a Mary Armet Scott in the Scottish BMD index for that year registered in Garvald. Adam and Mary had the following children:

Adam was recorded as a Publisher's Warehouseman, and the hose was listed as having 2 rooms with more than one window. The couple were identified as having been married for 2 years and having been married for 3 years and having had just the one living child.

Adam sailed from Glasgow on 22 November 1913 on board the SS. Columbia and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on 1 December 1913. He was recorded as Adam Grieve aged 31, a Warehouseman, Scottish and his last residence being Edinburgh. His next of kin at home was his wife Mary Grieve, 23 Upper Grove Place, Edinburgh and his eventual destination was given as Ontario, Toronto. I believe Mary and the children following on in 1914, as for the Canadian census of 1921 Adam and Mary were recorded in York, Ontario, with his wife and his two eldest children identified as having joined Adam in Canada in 1914. The baby Francis born the previous year was listed a born in Canada.

I believe Mary Armet Grieve, nee Scott, died on 14 October 1936 in York, Ontario, Canada, and Adam Grieve died on 25 July 1938 also in York, Ontario, Canada.

I believe that Mitchell Grieve died in 1907 as there is a record of the death of a Mitchell Grieve , aged 22, in the Scottish BMD index for that year registered in St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Jane Currie Grieve was born about 1886 in Edinburgh, Midlothian.

Appeared on her father's 1917 death certificate as "Jeanie Anderson - Daughter - 13 Salisbury Street" and on her sister Mary Currie Grieve\Kirwin as "Jeanie Anderson - sister". I believe that Jane married in 1913 as there is a record of the marriage of a Jane Currie Grieve and a George Anderson in the Scottish BMD index for that year registered in St Giles, Edinburgh.
