Possible parentage of Michael Grieve and Rachel Scott.
Please note whereas I try to ensure that what I publish is correct, and to differentiate between what is supported by documentation etc, and what is, in my opinion, a reasonable assumption, everything should be treated with caution. Assuming that the age and place of birth given for Michael Grieve on the 1851 census record and the age on this grave stone are correct he would have been born in 1780 in Hawick and there is a record in the Hawick parish register of a Michael Grieve being baptised on 27th February 1780, son of John Grieve and Helen Carthrae. This would seem likely to be our Michael Grieve. No record of a marriage of John Grieve and Helen Carthrae or the birth/ baptisms of any other children has been found.
Similarly assuming that the age and place of birth given for Rachel Scott on the 1851 census record and the age on the grave stone are correct, she would have been born in 1787 in Hawick. However, no record of the birth/baptisms of a Rachel Scott in Roxburghshire or the surrounding counties has been found as of yet.
