John Buller born 16 December 1837 and baptised 31 December 1837, Wellington, Somerset.

For the census of 1861 John Buller was recorded as lodging in the household of Edward Forward and his wife Rebecca, in Somers Town, St Pancras, London. He was recorded as unmarried, aged 23, working as a carpenter, born in Wellington, Somerset.

For the census of 1871 he was again recorded as lodging in the household of Edward Forward and his wife Rebecca, in Somers Town, St Pancras, London.. He was recorded as still unmarried, aged 33, again employed as a a carpenter, and born in Wellington, Somerset.

For the 1881 census John was still recorded in St Pancras, London, resident at 9 Sidney Street. He was identified as married, aged 43 with his occupation "Joiner", and born in Wellington, Somerset. Although he was identified as married, no wife is recorded in the household. There is a record of the marriage of a John Buller or Butler to a Jessie Simmons in the BMD index of April-June 1871 for Pancras which could be a marriage of this John Buller, but no further evidence has been unearthed to substantiate or disprove this. No obvious records of a Jessie Simmons in the 1871 census, Jessie Buller in the 1881 and subsequent censuses, or the demise of a Jessie Simmons post 1871 has yet been found.

John Buller Head - Married 43 Joiner Wellington, Somerset

Intriguingly for the 1891 census John was again recorded at 9 Sidney Street and again listed as married, aged 53, occupation "Joiner" (employee), and born in Wellington, Somerset, but now with a wife and two lodgers included in his household. His wife Emily Buller, was recorded as aged 50, born in Croydon, and the lodgers were Frederick Kendell aged 18, a Picture Frame Fitter (employed), and George Kendell, aged 16, a Greengrocers Assistant, with both listed as born in St Pancras, London. In fact this Emily Buller was one and the same as the Emily Kendal, recorded at 9 Sidney Street, in the entry prior to John in the 1881 census, where she was identified head of the household, a widow, aged 40, a Laundress, born in Croydon, Surrey. Recorded in her household were her sons Thomas Kendal aged 15, Earnest Kendal aged 10, Frederick Kendal aged 8, and George Kendal aged 6, all identified as born in London, Middlesex, and it was the Frederick and Thomas that were being identified as lodgers in the 1891 census. Emily's maiden name was Simmons and she had married a Thomas Philip Kindell in 17 September 1865 in Old Church, Saint Pancras, London. It would seem that Thomas had died in 1875 as there is a record in the BMD index for the October-December quarter of 1875 of the death of a Thomas Kindell aged 36, registered in St Pancras. There is however no record of a marriage between John Buller and Emily so it would seem they never wed. However it is interesting that Emily's maiden name was SIMMONS and the prospective marriage for John Buller back in 1871 was a Jessie SIMMONS. Could it be that John Buller had originally married a Jessie Simmons and that Jessie was a close relative of Emily? Could it be that Jessie and John had gone their separate ways and John had taken up with the widowed Emily thereafter?

For the census of 1901 John and Emily were still in Sidney Street, with John recorded as aged 63, employed as a carpenter, born in Wellington, Somerset, and Emily recorded as aged 60 born in Croydon, Surrey.

Between 1901 and 1911 it would seem the John Buller had a run in with the las as for the 1911 census he was recorded as an inmate in HM Prison, Brixton Hill, Brixton, identified as aged 73, a carpenter, born in Wellington, Somerset. He was also listed as widowed which was incorrect at least as far as Emily being his wife was concerned as she was alive and resident back in Sidney Street. However if the designation of "married" from the 1881 census was correct, then it could suggest the demise of a wife sometime between 1881 and 1911.

1911 - HM Prison, Brixton Hill, Brixton S W, Lambeth, London Registration District Number: 25 Sub-registration district: Norwood ED, institution, or vessel: 44-47 Piece: 2143 John Buller Widowed 73 CARPENTER Wellington, Somerset, England

With regards to Emily she was recorded as Emily KINDELL, resident back at Sidney Street, aged 69, working at "Washing", and born in Croydon, Surrey. She was also recorded as widowed which was correct assuming she and John had not married and she was referring to her marriage to Thomas Kindell.

1911 - St Pancras, London 9 Sidney Street, St Pancras, London Registration district: St Pancras Registration District Number: 9 Sub-registration district: East St Pancras ED, institution, or vessel: 25 Piece: 736 Emily Kindell Widowed 69 WASHING Croydon, Surrey

It would seem that John Buller died in 1915 as there is a record of the death of a John Buller aged 78 in the BMD index for St Pancras in the October-December quarter of 1915. It would seem that Emily Kindell died in 1919 as there is a record of the death of an Emily Kindell aged 77 in the BMD index for St Pancras in the July-September quarter of 1919.
